Hadith 1

This hadith is one of the most foundational in Islam. It teaches that the outer action alone is not enough; what gives an action its value before Allah is the intention (niyyah) behind it. Two people could do the exact same deed — prayer, charity, studying, even migration — but one may be rewarded fully while the other receives little or no reward simply because of what they intended.
The example of emigration (hijrah) given here is powerful. In early Islam, people left their homes and families to join the Prophet in Madinah. Some did it sincerely seeking Allah’s pleasure. Others did it for trade or marriage. Externally, they all looked the same, but internally, their destinations were completely different. This hadith reminds us to constantly renew our intentions and purify them from showing off, seeking praise, or any worldly aim that overrides Allah’s pleasure.

This hadith was said in Madinah after the major hijrah had taken place. There was a man known as “Muhajir Umm Qays” — he emigrated to marry a woman named Umm Qays, not primarily for the sake of Allah. The Prophet (ﷺ) said this statement to make clear that actions are judged by what is in the heart, not just by outward appearance. This was a major spiritual correction at a time when some people thought that simply performing the physical act of hijrah was enough, regardless of intention.

Imam al-Bukhari placed this hadith at the very beginning of his Sahih to teach every reader that the intention behind seeking knowledge and compiling hadith must be solely for Allah. Imam al-Nawawi in his Arba‘in says that this hadith is one of the “axes of Islam” — one third of all Islamic ethics revolve around it. Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani in Fath al-Bari explains that intention distinguishes worship from habit (e.g., eating to worship Allah vs. eating just for desire) and that renewal of intention is required for every act of obedience.

• Before any act of worship, even a small one like giving a dollar in charity, pause for five seconds and say in your heart: “I am doing this for Allah alone.” This turns a routine action into an act of reward.

• If you find yourself showing off or wanting people to praise you for a good deed, quietly repeat the hadith to yourself and remind your heart that the only audience that matters is Allah.

• Start your day by renewing your intention for your work, studies, or household duties: “I am working to support my family for Allah’s sake” or “I am studying to benefit the Ummah.” This turns permissible acts into acts of worship.

`Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated this hadith. He was one of the strongest and most respected companions, known for his justice and directness. Before Islam, he was fierce against Muslims, but after his conversion, he became a pillar of the faith. He was the second caliph of Islam. His narrations are known for their precision and weight. The fact that such a decisive leader narrated a hadith about hidden intentions shows that Islam values the heart over outward strength.

Modern psychology confirms that intention shapes neuroplasticity and behavior. Studies on “goal intention” show that people who are clear about their why (their deeper motivation) are more persistent, less prone to burnout, and more satisfied with outcomes. This aligns with the hadith: when the intention is for Allah, the person finds deeper fulfillment even in hardship. Additionally, research on intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation shows that actions done for internal rewards (like Allah’s pleasure) lead to greater long-term well-being than actions done for external rewards (money, praise).

Year 2 AH. Today the Messenger (ﷺ) gathered us after Maghrib. I, `Umar, was sitting near the front. A man was weeping in the back — he had emigrated only to marry a woman and now feared his hijrah was worthless. The Prophet’s face became serious. Then he said these words: “Actions are but by intentions.” I felt as if a light entered my chest. I thought of my own jahiliyyah days when I used to show off my strength. Now every time I lift my sword for Allah’s cause or give a coin to an orphan, I whisper inside me: “For You alone, O Allah.” This one sentence has changed how I breathe. I will never forget it.

This hadith reveals the Prophet’s (ﷺ) incredible spiritual depth. He didn’t judge the man who emigrated for marriage as a hypocrite; instead, he used the incident to teach a universal principle. This shows his mercy and wisdom as a teacher. He could have punished or shamed the man, but he chose education over condemnation. The Prophet (ﷺ) was not focused on outward spectacle — he was concerned with the hidden garden of the heart. This is why he is the ultimate guide for inner purification (tazkiyah). He knew that the real battle for a believer is not with enemies outside, but with the nafs (ego) and its hidden desires.
